Spice, Stone & Smoke: A Cairo Food & Bazaar Weekend — Cairo

This weekend digs into Cairo's edible and architectural soul — from the ancient alleyways of Islamic Cairo and the commanding hilltop Citadel, to a legendary koshary joint and an Ottoman-inspired dinner. Day one stays grounded in the old city; day two crosses to the west bank of downtown culture before an evening on the rooftops. No pyramids, no rush — just the city at its most lived-in.

Day 1

  1. 09:00

    Arrive & Check In

    ~60 min

Settle into your hotel and orient yourself. Islamic Cairo is your playground today — comfortable shoes and a light bag are all you need.

  2. 10:00

    Al-Azhar Mosque

    ~60 min

Begin the day at one of the Islamic world's oldest universities and most storied mosques. The layered minarets, each added by a different dynasty, tell Cairo's political history in stone. Step inside the courtyard in the quieter morning hours and let the scale of the place set the tone for the day.

  3. 12:00

    Lunch at Koshary Abou Tarek

    ~45 min

Cairo's most celebrated koshary institution has been piling lentils, pasta, rice and crispy onions into bowls for decades. It is fast, fiercely local and completely unpretentious — exactly the right way to fuel up before an afternoon on your feet. Point at the size you want and find a counter stool.

  4. 13:30

Cairo Citadel & Muhammad Ali Mosque

    ~90 min

Ride up to Saladin's great hilltop fortress and spend the early afternoon inside the Citadel complex. The Muhammad Ali Mosque crowns the ridge with its Ottoman-style alabaster interior and twin minarets — and the panoramic view over the minarets and rooftops of old Cairo below is the best vantage point in the city.

  5. 15:30

    Free Wander: Khan el-Khalili Lanes

    ~90 min

Drop down from the Citadel and lose yourself in the covered bazaar quarter around Khan el-Khalili. Browse brass lanterns, bolts of cloth, spice sacks and silver work at your own pace — bargaining is part of the conversation. Follow your nose into a backstreet ahwa (coffeehouse) for a glass of mint tea and a shisha if the afternoon calls for it.

  6. 19:30

    Dinner at Osmanly Restaurant

    ~90 min

End the day with an Ottoman-inspired spread at Osmanly — a fitting culinary echo of the mosque you visited this afternoon. Rich mezze, slow-cooked meats and ornate surroundings make it a proper sit-down close to a day spent in medieval Cairo.

  7. 21:30

    Nightcap at Bab El-Sharq

    ~60 min

Round off the evening at Bab El-Sharq for a relaxed late bite or a final drink in an atmosphere that nods to the Eastern city you've spent the day exploring. A low-key, characterful close to day one.

Day 2

  1. 09:00

Morning at the Mosque of Ibn Tulun

    ~75 min

Cairo's oldest intact mosque is also its most atmospheric in the early morning light. The vast open courtyard and the unique spiral minaret — inspired by ancient Mesopotamian ziggurats — feel worlds away from the tourist trail. Climb the minaret for a sweeping view of the city waking up around you.

  2. 10:30

Stroll to the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As

    ~60 min

A short ride south brings you to Africa's first mosque, built in 642 CE and rebuilt and expanded many times since. The current structure is serene and largely unvisited by tourists — a genuinely quiet counterpoint to the more famous landmarks on the itinerary.

  3. 12:30

Lunch at The Blue Restaurant & Grill

    ~75 min

Head into downtown for lunch at The Blue Restaurant & Grill — a solid midday anchor after a morning of mosque-hopping. Take your time over the meal; the afternoon has culture ahead of it.

  4. 14:15

    Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Square

    ~105 min

The legendary pink building on Tahrir Square holds one of the world's great collections of ancient artefacts — Tutankhamun's golden mask, royal mummies and thousands of objects spanning 5,000 years. Allow a good hour and a half to move through the highlights without rushing. The old-school labelling and creaking wooden floors are part of the charm.

  5. 16:30

    Rest & Freshen Up

    ~60 min

Head back to the hotel for a breather before the evening. Cairo's dining scene gets going late, so an hour's rest between sightseeing and dinner is well earned.

  6. 19:30

    Dinner at Pane Vino Restaurant

    ~90 min

Close out the trip with dinner at Pane Vino — a change of register after two days of Egyptian and Ottoman flavours, offering a more intimate, Mediterranean-leaning setting for a long, leisurely final meal.

  7. 21:30

Farewell Drink at The Roof Top

    ~60 min

Finish the weekend at The Roof Top for a drink with Cairo's skyline spread out beneath you — minarets lit against the night sky, the hum of the city still audible from above. A fittingly elevated farewell to a weekend spent at street level.
