Parks, Markets & the Water Between — Amsterdam

This three-day arc moves through Amsterdam's most liveable quarters rather than its most photographed ones. Day one plants you in the Oud-West — Vondelpark in the morning, the Westerkerk as a stone anchor, then lunch and an afternoon wander toward the Stedelijk. Day two crosses to De Pijp for the Albert Cuypmarkt, a proper Indonesian lunch, and the Wereldmuseum before evening drinks near Rembrandtplein. Day three takes the free ferry to Noord, spending the morning at EYE Film Museum before looping back via the Haarlemmerstraat, the Westerpark and its urban farm quarter.

Day 1

  1. 09:00

    Check in & settle

    ~30 min

Drop your bags and get your bearings. The Oud-West sits at the heart of today's route, so a hotel anywhere between Leidseplein and the Jordaan puts everything within easy walking distance.

  2. 09:30

    Morning in Vondelpark

    ~75 min

Amsterdam's great green lung is best experienced before the afternoon crowds arrive. Follow the main pond, watch the rose garden come to life, and find a bench near the open-air theatre — there's no better way to calibrate your pace for the days ahead.

  3. 11:00

    Westerkerk

    ~50 min

A short walk north from the park brings you to the tallest church tower in Amsterdam. Climb it for a rooftop panorama of the canal ring, or linger in the interior where Rembrandt is buried. The carillon bells ring out across the Jordaan every quarter-hour.

    Westerkerk
  4. 12:30

    Lunch at Klein Breda

    ~60 min

A neighbourhood restaurant that fits the Oud-West's unhurried character perfectly — good food without ceremony, the kind of place locals return to rather than tick off a list.

    Lunch at Klein Breda
  5. 14:00

    Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

    ~100 min

The Stedelijk's collection of modern and contemporary art — from De Stijl and Mondrian to post-war design — rewards an unhurried afternoon. The building itself, with its distinctive white bathtub extension, is part of the experience.

    Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
  6. 17:30

    Evening drinks at Rosalia's Menagerie

    ~90 min

End the day at this warmly lit bar whose eclectic décor — think taxidermy and mismatched chairs — makes it one of the more characterful spots in the neighbourhood. A good place to work through the gin list and debrief on the Stedelijk.

    Evening drinks at Rosalia's Menagerie

Day 2

  1. 09:30

    Albert Cuypmarkt wander

    ~60 min

De Pijp's famous street market stretches for over a kilometre and sells everything from stroopwafels and raw herring to vintage fabrics and cut flowers. Go early for the pick of the produce stalls and the best light for photos.

  2. 10:45

    Wereldmuseum Amsterdam

    ~90 min

Housed in a monumental building on the Nieuwe Herengracht, this museum asks searching questions about the world's connected histories through objects, textiles and immersive displays drawn from cultures across five continents.

    Wereldmuseum Amsterdam
  3. 12:30

    Lunch at De Waaghals

    ~70 min

A De Pijp institution with a loyal following for its vegetarian and organic cooking. The menu changes with the market and the seasons, and the unhurried dining room feels a world away from the tourist trail.

    Lunch at De Waaghals
  4. 14:00

    Singel canal walk

    ~60 min

Amsterdam's innermost canal makes for a fine afternoon stroll — cross the Blauwbrug and follow the water north, past houseboats and gabled warehouses, letting the city reveal itself at its own pace.

    Singel canal walk
  5. 15:15

    Rembrandtplein

    ~30 min

The square comes alive in the late afternoon. The bronze statues re-enacting Rembrandt's Night Watch make for a striking photo stop before you settle in for the evening.

    Rembrandtplein
  6. 18:30

    Dinner at Tujuh Maret

    ~90 min

One of Amsterdam's best addresses for Indonesian cooking, Tujuh Maret serves a rijsttafel that draws on the full breadth of the archipelago's spice traditions. Book ahead if you can — this place fills quickly.

    Dinner at Tujuh Maret
  7. 20:30

    Nightcap at Café Sarphaat

    ~60 min

A proper De Pijp brown café — dark wood, good beer and a neighbourhood crowd that knows how to end an evening without fuss.

    Nightcap at Café Sarphaat

Day 3

  1. 09:15

    Ferry to Amsterdam Noord

    ~15 min

The free GVB ferry from behind Centraal Station crosses the IJ in five minutes and is one of Amsterdam's great small pleasures. Watch the city's skyline recede as the industrial waterfront of Noord comes into view.

  2. 09:30

    NEMO Science Center

    ~90 min

Even if science museums aren't your usual territory, NEMO's rooftop terrace alone — with its sweeping view over the harbour and the old city — is worth the trip. The stepped copper-green hull of the building is one of Renzo Piano's most photogenic works.

    NEMO Science Center
  3. 11:15

Ferry back & walk to Haarlemmerstraat

    ~25 min

Return on the ferry and head west along the IJ-promenade toward the Haarlemmerstraat, one of Amsterdam's most rewarding shopping and eating streets — independent bakeries, wine shops and delis line both sides.

  4. 12:00

    Lunch at In de Waag

    ~75 min

Set inside a 15th-century city gate on the Nieuwmarkt, this restaurant serves honest Dutch-European food in one of the most atmospheric interiors in the city — all candlelight and thick stone walls, even at midday.

    Lunch at In de Waag
  5. 13:30

    Noorderkerk & the Westerpark

    ~90 min

Head north-west to the early 17th-century Noorderkerk — one of Amsterdam's most austere and beautiful Protestant churches — then follow the canal path into the Westerpark. The park's former gasworks have been converted into creative studios, a farm and event spaces that sit comfortably alongside the lawns.

    Noorderkerk & the Westerpark
  6. 18:30

    Farewell dinner at Flore

    ~105 min

A fitting close to three days of neighbourhood Amsterdam: Flore's kitchen works with seasonal, thoughtfully sourced produce and the atmosphere is warm without being precious — exactly what you want on a final evening.
