Two Days Along the Oudegracht

Drop your bags at your hotel and get your bearings. Utrecht's compact centre means almost everything on this itinerary is walkable from the station or the Domplein.

Start at the city's spiritual and architectural anchor. The Dom Tower — the tallest church tower in the Netherlands — stands where the cathedral nave once connected it before a storm tore the nave away in 1674. The gap in the square tells that story better than any museum could. Take your time, look up, and let the scale of the place settle.

Descend to the canal-level wharves of the Oudegracht for lunch at Mahanakorn. The kitchen brings genuine Bangkok energy to the waterfront — fragrant curries, punchy stir-fries — and the setting, right by the water, makes it one of the most atmospheric midday stops in the city.

Walk the full length of Utrecht's signature canal, dipping into the wharf-level passages below street level. Browse independent bookshops and boutiques along the way, or simply follow the water wherever it leads. The lower terraces are quieter than the street above — a different city running parallel to the one most visitors see.

Pull up a stool at this Belgian beer temple on the Oudegracht. The selection of Trappists and lambics is serious — staff know every bottle on the shelf and are happy to guide you. Order something you've never heard of. That's the whole point.

Start day two with a slow walk to the Neude, Utrecht's grandest square. Pick up a coffee from any of the independent spots around the square's edge and watch the city ease into its morning before the day gets going.

Settle in at De Beurs for a late-morning drink. The grand café occupies a room with genuinely impressive ceiling height and an unbeatable view across the Neude. Ideal for a leisurely second coffee or an early-afternoon beer while the square's theatre plays out in front of you.

A short walk from the Neude, Konnichi Wa on Mariastraat serves precise Japanese cooking — clean sashimi, carefully assembled bento — where the restraint on the plate is itself a form of generosity. A calm, focused lunch before the afternoon unfolds.

Take a breath. Utrecht has several smaller museums worth exploring — the Centraal Museum, the Railway Museum — or simply follow the ring of canals south from the city centre at whatever pace feels right.
