Double Exposure: Vancouver on Screen — Vancouver

Vancouver has played Seattle, New York, and countless fictional cities for decades — its Gothic stone facades, rain-slicked cobblestones, and modernist steel towers are baked into the visual grammar of North American film and television. This two-day itinerary moves through the real neighbourhoods and landmarks that camera crews have quietly colonised, from Gastown's gas-lit streets to the dramatic sweep of False Creek, letting you read the city as the location scout would. Eat well, drink thoughtfully, and look up — the details are the whole point.

Day 1

  1. 09:00

Check In & Get Your Bearings

    ~45 min

Drop your bags at your downtown hotel and get oriented. The grid of streets between Gastown and Yaletown is walkable and compact — you won't need a car today.

  2. 10:00

    Vancouver Police Museum

    ~75 min

Start in Gastown at the city's old Coroner's Court building, which served as the city morgue for decades and has since become one of Vancouver's more atmospheric small museums. The autopsy theatre, evidence room and forensic displays are genuinely arresting.

  3. 12:00

Lunch at The Boss Bakery & Restaurant

    ~60 min

Head a few blocks south into Chinatown for a no-frills lunch at this long-standing bakery and café. Barbecue pork buns, congee and cha siu rice plates — honest, affordable, and exactly the kind of place that has kept the neighbourhood running through every wave of change.

  4. 13:15

    Chinese Canadian Museum

    ~75 min

Still in Chinatown, this museum opened in 2023 inside the heritage Wing Sang building — the oldest commercial building in the neighbourhood. The permanent collection tells the story of Chinese Canadians across 150 years of BC history with candour and care. It's also a reminder that the streets outside aren't simply a backdrop; they hold real and complex lives that predate any camera crew.

  5. 15:00

    Science World

    ~90 min

The geodesic dome at the eastern end of False Creek is one of Vancouver's most recognisable silhouettes — its reflective sphere visible from almost every elevated vantage point in the city. Inside, the hands-on science galleries are legitimately engaging for adults, but the real draw here is the building itself and the waterfront promenade around it, with uninterrupted views back toward the downtown towers that have stood in for so many other skylines.

  6. 18:00

    Evening Drinks at Alibi Room

    ~75 min

Return to Gastown as the light drops and the cobblestone streets take on that particular grey-blue quality that makes this neighbourhood so compelling on camera. The Alibi Room is a serious craft-beer destination — over 50 taps, almost entirely BC and Pacific Northwest breweries — in a warmly lit, unpretentious space. Order a flight, settle in, and watch the neighbourhood do what it does.

  7. 19:30

    Dinner at Steamworks

    ~90 min

A few steps away, Steamworks occupies a cavernous heritage brick building right on the Gastown-waterfront edge. The brewpub menu runs from proper burgers to Pacific seafood, and the multi-level interior — exposed brick, copper vessels, harbour views — feels cinematic in the best way. A solid end to a day spent reading the city's visual language.

Day 2

  1. 09:30

    Brunch at Hunnybee Bruncheonette

    ~75 min

Day two begins in Strathcona — Vancouver's oldest residential neighbourhood and a quiet favourite of location scouts who need something that reads as gritty, lived-in East Side. Hunnybee is a bright, counter-service spot known for inventive brunch plates and very good coffee. Arrive early; it fills up quickly.

  2. 11:00

    Vancouver Art Gallery

    ~90 min

The VAG occupies the former Provincial Courthouse — a neoclassical pile of columns and marble steps on Robson Square that has appeared in more courtroom and civic drama productions than anyone has properly catalogued. Inside, the collection emphasises Canadian artists with particular depth in Emily Carr's Pacific Northwest landscapes. The building's grand rotunda and exterior steps are worth as much time as the galleries.

  3. 12:45

    Lunch at Zab Zaab

    ~60 min

A short walk into Yaletown for Isan Thai cooking — the punchy, herb-forward food of northeastern Thailand, built around papaya salads, larb and fermented fish sauce. Zab Zaab doesn't pull punches on heat. The neighbourhood is a former warehouse district of low brick buildings.

  4. 14:00

    BC Place

    ~60 min

Walk south along the seawall to BC Place, the domed stadium whose retractable roof and white fabric exterior have made it a reliable stand-in for large-scale arena and event settings. The stadium tour takes you through the field level and press box, offering a different angle on a structure that reads very differently up close than it does across False Creek. If your dates align with Canada Super60 on September 29th or 30th, tickets are available for the multi-match event there.

    BC Place
  5. 15:30

    H. R. MacMillan Space Centre

    ~90 min

Head west to Vanier Park and the Space Centre, which shares its roof with the Museum of Vancouver and sits beside the water with the mountains as a backdrop. The planetarium dome and cosmic displays feel genuinely otherworldly — appropriate for a city that has stood in for alien invasion scenarios more times than most. The exterior of the building, with its hyperbolic paraboloid dome, is architecturally striking in ways that hold up against a grey Pacific sky.

  6. 17:30

    Drinks at Long Table Distillery

    ~60 min

Head back downtown to Long Table, a compact distillery tasting room that does excellent gin cocktails using botanicals with a distinct Pacific Northwest character — juniper, Douglas fir, local citrus. It's a low-key, convivial spot that rewards a slow drink and a conversation. A proper prelude to the evening.

  7. 19:00

    Dinner at Lupo

    ~90 min

End the trip at Lupo, a Yaletown Italian restaurant with a menu that leans into well-made pasta and wood-fired dishes without overclaiming. The room is warm and unhurried — a good place to take stock of two days spent looking at a city that has spent years looking like somewhere else, and appreciating it for exactly what it is.
