East Side Current — Vancouver

This two-day route digs into Vancouver's east side with intention: Day 1 follows Main Street from Mount Pleasant's pub culture up through Strathcona's brunch scene, then crosses to the Commercial Drive corridor anchored by the SkyTrain stations that frame it. Day 2 swings west along the False Creek waterfront to the science-dome and out to Kitsilano's botanical garden, bookended by big-flavour meals. Photographs, neighbourhood texture, and a live-music option on the Saturday night make this far more than a sightseeing lap.

Day 1

  1. 09:00

    Check in & get oriented

    ~30 min

Drop your bags at your east-side or downtown base and pick up your bearings before heading out. The day runs south-to-north, so dress for walking.

  2. 09:30

    Hunnybee Bruncheonette

    ~60 min

Kick the day off at this Strathcona brunch room that earns its photograph — the food is as considered as the room. Order something you'd never make at home and take your time; the neighbourhood is quiet enough in the morning to make lingering feel right.

    Hunnybee Bruncheonette
  3. 10:45

    Sam Kee Building

    ~30 min

A short walk drops you into Chinatown's edge, where the Sam Kee Building holds its world-record-thin footprint with complete confidence. Stand back and appreciate what a developer can build in spite, then photograph it — it photographs beautifully.

    Sam Kee Building
  4. 11:15

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden

    ~60 min

Step through the gate and the city noise fades. This is the first full-scale classical Chinese garden built outside China, and every rock, pool and corridor was assembled by craftspeople from Suzhou. Move slowly — the compositions shift at every turn.

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden
  5. 12:30

    The Ivanhoe Pub

    ~75 min

Head up to Mount Pleasant for lunch at this neighbourhood pub that's been pouring pints since the early twentieth century. The room has a lived-in warmth, the beer list punches above its weight, and it's exactly the kind of place a good east-side afternoon pivots around.

  6. 14:00

    Commercial–Broadway Station

    ~45 min

Walk or grab a quick bus east to one of Vancouver's great street-level SkyTrain stations. Commercial–Broadway is also the gateway to The Drive — the kilometre-long stretch of Italian-immigrant-roots cafés, record shops, and mural walls that defines the neighbourhood's character. Wander north along Commercial Drive at your own pace.

    Commercial–Broadway Station
  7. 14:50

    VCC–Clark Station

    ~25 min

A short stroll or one stop on the Expo Line, VCC–Clark is worth the detour for the vantage point it offers over the Clark Drive rail corridor and the city grid below. Good light for photographs in the late afternoon.

    VCC–Clark Station
  8. 15:20

    Free wander: The Drive

    ~60 min

Loop back south along Commercial Drive with no fixed agenda. Browse the independent shops, duck into a café for an espresso, check record bins — this stretch rewards slow movement more than deliberate planning.

  9. 18:30

    Alibi Room

    ~90 min

End the evening in Gastown at one of the city's most photographed bar rooms. The Alibi Room's BC craft tap list is serious and carefully rotated — ask what's pouring from the Okanagan tonight. The warm brick interior makes it easy to stay for one more.

    Alibi Room
  10. 20:30

Cheekface w/ special guest Waitress — The WISE Hall

    ~120 min

If your dates align with 17 October 2026, The WISE Hall on East Hastings is showing Cheekface with Waitress in support — a fitting east-side cap to the night. The hall is a neighbourhood institution and the room is small enough that every show feels immediate.

Day 2

  1. 08:30

Café start — no fixed address

    ~30 min

Day 2 swings west, so start with a slow coffee near your accommodation before heading toward the False Creek waterfront.

  2. 09:00

CRAFT Beer Market — False Creek

    ~75 min

A waterfront brunch at Olympic Village, with the False Creek inlet right outside the window. The photograph earns its place — the room opens dramatically onto the water, and the morning menu is far more considered than the beer-hall name suggests.

  3. 10:30

    Dominion Building

    ~30 min

Head downtown briefly to stand in front of Vancouver's first 'skyscraper' — a 1910 terracotta tower that briefly held the title of tallest building in the British Empire. The details at street level are worth the close look before heading back toward the waterfront.

    Dominion Building
  4. 11:05

    Burrard Bridge

    ~35 min

Walk or cycle across the Burrard Bridge — the 1932 Art Deco span that connects downtown to Kitsilano. The pedestrian lane gives you an unobstructed view of English Bay to the west and the False Creek marina below. This is one of the city's great free photographs.

    Burrard Bridge
  5. 11:45

    VanDusen Botanical Garden

    ~90 min

Push south into Kitsilano's upper blocks for VanDusen — 22 hectares of themed garden rooms, from a Elizabethan hedge maze to a Sino-Himalayan collection. October brings the turning foliage, which makes this one of the better times of year to visit. Budget a leisurely 90 minutes.

    VanDusen Botanical Garden
  6. 13:30

    Kafka's Coffee

    ~45 min

A proper afternoon break at Kafka's — one of the Vancouver cafés that helped set the bar for serious espresso in the city. The room is calm, the drinks are made with care, and it's exactly the right gear-change between garden and dinner.

    Kafka's Coffee
  7. 14:30

    Museum of Anthropology at UBC

    ~100 min

The Arthur Erickson building on the UBC cliffs is one of the great museum experiences on the west coast. The Great Hall's floor-to-ceiling glass throws the Haida and Nisga'a totem poles into silhouette against the Georgia Strait — it's worth the bus ride out. Allow at least 90 minutes inside.

    Museum of Anthropology at UBC
  8. 16:20

    Transit back east

    ~35 min

Catch the 99 B-Line back along Broadway toward the city centre, swapping the UBC forest for the downtown grid in about 30 minutes.

  9. 19:00

    Lupo

    ~105 min

Finish the trip at Lupo in Yaletown — a composed Italian room that earns its reputation without fuss. The pasta is made in-house and the wine list is built for lingering. A fitting last meal after two days of east-side energy.
