Nice on Screen: Two Days Along the Riviera's Most Filmed Coastline

Wind down the afternoon with a drink at Le Sphynx, a Centre bar with the kind of lived-in character that makes it easy to linger longer than planned.

Dive straight into Vieux Nice with this 17th-century Genoese baroque palace, whose street-level pharmacy and upper-floor frescoes give you an immediate sense of the old town's layered history. The narrow Rue Droite outside is pure cinematic texture.

Take a bus or taxi up to the Cimiez quarter, where this ochre Genoese villa houses the world's most comprehensive collection of Matisse's work. The artist spent much of his life in Nice and is buried nearby — the hilltop setting adds another layer of perspective to his sun-saturated palette.

Down the hill from Cimiez, the Chagall museum was designed specifically to house the artist's Biblical Message series — seventeen monumental canvases in a building flooded with natural light. It's one of the most intimate and carefully considered art spaces on the Côte d'Azur.

Return to Vieux Nice for a pre-dinner drink at this characterful bar. The name says it all — it's a place built around tasting, and the atmosphere in the early evening is exactly right for unwinding after a day of museums.
