Sun, Stone & Salt Air — Antalya

This four-day Antalya itinerary moves at a deliberately leisurely pace, weaving together the layered history of Kaleiçi with the big-sky archaeology of Perge, Aspendos and Phaselis, and punctuating it all with long lunches and easy evenings in the old town's bars and restaurants. Each day has a clear arc — mornings exploring ruins or coastline, afternoons at beaches or lesser-visited monuments, and evenings spent at characteristic local tables. No rushing, no box-ticking: just the Riviera at its best.

Day 1

  1. 13:00

    Arrive & Check In

    ~60 min

Settle into your accommodation in or near Kaleiçi — the old walled quarter is the ideal base for the days ahead. Drop your bags, open the shutters and let the scent of jasmine and sea salt do the welcoming.

  2. 14:30

    Hadrian's Gate

    ~45 min

Begin where emperors once entered: Hadrian's Gate is Antalya's most striking Roman threshold, a triple-arched marble monument erected for Hadrian's visit in 130 AD. Walk through it slowly — the carved ceiling coffers and fluted columns reward a close look before you press on into the old quarter.

  3. 15:15

Kesik Minare & the Old Quarter Wander

    ~60 min

A short stroll west brings you to Kesik Minare — the 'Truncated Minaret' — whose fire-scarred walls carry two thousand years of religious reinvention from Roman temple to Byzantine basilica to Ottoman mosque. From here, lose yourself in the narrow lanes of Kaleiçi for an hour: the Roman harbour wall, the bougainvillea-draped Ottoman mansions and the cat-patrolled courtyards are the real texture of the city.

  4. 19:30

    Dinner at Kaleiçi Meyhanesi

    ~90 min

On Balıkpazarı Sokak, this old-town institution is the right first dinner in Antalya — a long spread of regional mezes arriving in waves, cold then warm, followed by whatever the kitchen is proud of that evening. Order the raki, take your time, and ease into the city's rhythm.

  5. 21:30

    Nightcap at The Cave Pub

    ~60 min

End the evening underground: The Cave Pub on İzmirli Ali Efendi Sokak wraps you in rough stone walls and candlelight, making it the ideal place to talk over the day's first impressions with a cold drink in hand.

Day 2

  1. 09:00

    Antalya Museum

    ~120 min

One of Turkey's great regional museums deserves a proper morning. The galleries move chronologically from prehistoric Anatolia through the Hellenistic and Roman material pulled from the digs at Perge — colossal marble gods, sarcophagi with faces still sharp after two millennia, and a children's hall that surprises at every turn. Arrive early before the tour groups.

    Antalya Museum
  2. 11:30

    Lunch at Esnaf Lokantası

    ~60 min

A worker's canteen in the best Turkish tradition: point at the trays, take a tray, pay almost nothing, eat extremely well. Slow-cooked stews, grilled meats and seasonal vegetables — no English menu needed, no pretension required.

  3. 13:00

    Konyaaltı Beach

    ~150 min

Konyaaltı's long pebble shore stretches west with the Bey Mountains as a dramatic backdrop — one of the great Mediterranean panoramas. The afternoon is yours: swim, read, or simply watch the light change on the limestone cliffs that drop straight into the sea.

    Konyaaltı Beach
  4. 17:30

    Hidirlik Tower at Sunset

    ~45 min

Walk along the old harbour walls to Hidirlik Tower, a squat Roman lighthouse at the tip of the Kaleiçi headland. The position is everything: sea on three sides, the harbour below, the sky going orange. It's a fine place to pause before the evening begins.

    Hidirlik Tower at Sunset
  5. 19:30

    Dinner at Vanilla

    ~90 min

On Hesapçı Sokak, Vanilla lifts the bar for an evening out — Mediterranean seafood and steaks handled with real technique in surroundings that feel genuinely sophisticated without being stuffy. Let the kitchen make the decisions and trust the wine list.

  6. 21:30

    Drinks at Asi Bar

    ~75 min

Yenikapı Sokak's most design-conscious address shakes craft cocktails for a crowd that actually dresses for the occasion. The bartenders are precise, the atmosphere sharp — a good counterpoint to the meze-and-raki pace of the rest of the week.

Day 3

  1. 08:30

    Day Trip to Perge

    ~30 min

Perge and Aspendos both lie east of Antalya — hire a car or join a morning transfer to cover both sites efficiently. The drive through the coastal plain, with citrus groves and the Taurus foothills, is a gentle start to the day.

  2. 09:00

    Perge

    ~120 min

Perge was one of the most prosperous cities of ancient Pamphylia, and walking its colonnaded main street — still largely intact, still shading visitors from the same sun it sheltered Roman merchants from — makes that prosperity tangible. The monumental gate, the stadium, the baths and the agora fill a proper two hours without feeling rushed.

    Perge
  3. 11:30

    Aspendos

    ~90 min

Twenty kilometres east, Aspendos holds one of the Mediterranean world's best-preserved Roman theatres — capacity 12,000, acoustics still working, original stage building still standing. Step onto the stage, look up at the tiers, and try to imagine it full. The aqueduct visible from the site adds another layer of Roman engineering to absorb.

    Aspendos
  4. 13:30

Lunch at By Gülel Kebap House

    ~60 min

Back in the city, this focused kebap specialist turns out vertical-spit döner with charred edges and properly rendered fat — the real thing. Simple, satisfying and exactly what is needed after a morning in the ruins.

  5. 15:00

    Termessus

    ~150 min

Northwest of Antalya, perched on a mountain ledge at over 1,000 metres, Termessus is one of the most dramatically sited ancient cities in Turkey — and one Alexander the Great chose not to besiege. The site sits inside Olympos Beydağları National Park, and the walk up through pine and cedar to the theatre, rock-cut tombs and city walls is as rewarding as the ruins themselves. Wear good shoes and bring water.

    Termessus
  6. 20:30

    Evening at Kayip Akustikhane

    ~120 min

Tonight is for listening. Kayip Akustikhane puts live acoustic music at the centre of the evening — no background act, no DJ filling gaps, just musicians playing to an audience that showed up specifically to hear them. Order a drink, find a seat and let the night unfold at its own tempo.

Day 4

  1. 09:00

    Phaselis

    ~150 min

An hour's drive south along the coast, Phaselis is one of the Riviera's most quietly beautiful ancient sites: three harbours, a colonnaded street, an agora and a theatre, all tucked into a pine-forested bay where the water is clear enough to see the ancient quay stones underwater. Swim off the ruins, then dry out on the pine needles — this is the day's centrepiece.

    Phaselis
  2. 11:30

    Olympos Beydağları National Park

    ~90 min

Phaselis sits inside the boundaries of Olympos Beydağları National Park, and after the ruins it's worth spending time in the park itself — the coastal path along the clifftops and the forest tracks offer a completely different pace from the archaeology, with sea views opening through the trees.

    Olympos Beydağları National Park
  3. 13:30

    Lunch at Aynalı

    ~75 min

Back in the city, Aynalı's kitchen keeps it elemental: whatever the boats brought in that morning, prepared simply and confidently. After a morning at the coast, this is exactly the right register — fresh fish, good olive oil, bread, a glass of something cold.

  4. 15:30

    Atatürk's House Museum

    ~60 min

A late-Ottoman mansion that hosted Atatürk during his visits to Antalya, now preserved as a small museum. The rooms, photographs and personal objects offer an intimate counterpoint to the grand monuments of earlier days — history at a human scale.

    Atatürk's House Museum
  5. 19:00

    Farewell Dinner at Puding Restaurant

    ~90 min

A fitting last dinner: Puding's Italian-regional hybrid on Mermerli Sokak bridges Mediterranean culinary traditions in ways that feel both familiar and unexpected. The setting inside Kaleiçi is a reminder of how well the old city wears its layers.

  6. 21:00

    Final Drinks at Roots

    ~90 min

Round off the trip at this Mescit Sokak retreat — earthy decor, a relaxed crowd and none of the tourist-strip noise. A good place to sit with whatever you're drinking and let four days of sun, stone and sea air settle properly.
