Vienna in Three Acts — Vienna

Three days, three distinct moods: the medieval heart of the Innere Stadt and its Habsburg treasures on day one; the creative quarter, the golden Secession dome, and the grand Rathaus on day two; and the Belvedere's painterly riches followed by a sunset ride up the Danube Tower to close on day three. Lunch and dinner are woven in at every turn, each meal chosen to reflect the neighbourhood it sits in.

Day 1

  1. 09:00

    Arrive & Check In

    ~45 min

Drop your bags at your hotel in the Innere Stadt — walking distance to everything on today's list — and get your bearings before stepping out into the old city.

  2. 10:00

    St. Stephen's Cathedral

    ~75 min

The first proper stop is the Gothic heart of Vienna. Climb the South Tower for rooftop views over the terracotta-tiled roof, or descend into the catacombs — either way, Stephansdom earns every minute you give it.

    St. Stephen's Cathedral
  3. 11:30

    Lunch at Trześniewski

    ~45 min

A Viennese institution just steps from the cathedral: Trześniewski's open-faced rye-bread sandwiches have been fuelling city walkers for over a century. Quick, atmospheric, and unapologetically local.

    Lunch at Trześniewski
  4. 12:30

    The Hofburg & Imperial Treasury

    ~120 min

The Albertina sits at the edge of the Hofburg complex, giving you the ideal entry point into the imperial quarter. Spend the afternoon moving through the Hofburg's courtyards toward the Imperial Treasury, where the Habsburg crown jewels — including the 10th-century Imperial Crown — are displayed.

    The Hofburg & Imperial Treasury
  5. 14:45

    A stroll along the Ringstraße

    ~45 min

Walk a stretch of the grand boulevard that Emperor Franz Joseph commissioned in the 1860s. The Parliament, the Opera, the Kunsthistorisches Museum — the whole imperial ambition is laid out in stone along this ring road.

    A stroll along the Ringstraße
  6. 19:00

    Dinner at Vestibül

    ~90 min

Set inside the Burgtheater's own vestibule, this is one of the most atmospheric dining rooms in the city. The setting — all high ceilings and theatre-world energy — matches the ambition of the kitchen.

    Dinner at Vestibül
  7. 21:00

    Nightcap at Ruby Lissi

    ~60 min

Round off the first evening with a cocktail in the Innere Stadt. Ruby Lissi has the kind of relaxed confidence that makes it easy to linger over one drink longer than planned.

Day 2

  1. 09:00

    Morning Coffee & Pastry

    ~30 min

Start the day slowly at a neighbourhood café near your hotel before heading west toward the MuseumsQuartier.

  2. 09:30

    MuseumsQuartier & Leopold Museum

    ~60 min

The MuseumsQuartier's vast courtyard is worth a slow walk-through even before you go inside anywhere. Then head into the Leopold Museum — home to the world's largest Egon Schiele collection — for a vivid encounter with Viennese modernism.

    MuseumsQuartier & Leopold Museum
  3. 10:00

    Leopold Museum

    ~90 min

Inside the white limestone cube of the Leopold Museum, Schiele's raw, restless canvases share space with Klimt and Kokoschka. It's the single best place in Vienna to understand what the fin-de-siècle actually felt like.

    Leopold Museum
  4. 12:00

    Lunch at Amerlingbeisl

    ~60 min

A short walk into Neubau brings you to Amerlingbeisl, a classic Viennese Beisl with a leafy courtyard garden. Honest Austrian cooking in a neighbourhood that has quietly become one of the city's most interesting.

    Lunch at Amerlingbeisl
  5. 13:30

    Secession Building

    ~60 min

The Secession's gilded sphere — the artists called it the 'golden cabbage' — sits just south of the Ring Road. Inside, Klimt's Beethoven Frieze runs the full length of the basement: 34 metres of allegory painted directly onto the walls.

    Secession Building
  6. 15:00

    Vienna City Hall

    ~45 min

The neo-Gothic Rathaus faces the Burgtheater across the Rathausplatz in one of the city's great architectural stand-offs. Walk the park in front, admire the façade, and if the doors are open, step into the arcaded inner courtyard.

    Vienna City Hall
  7. 16:00

    Austrian Parliament Building

    ~45 min

Right next door, Theophil Hansen's neoclassical Parliament building — completed in 1883 — is flanked by the Athena Fountain. After renovations, the interior is newly open to visitors and well worth a look.

    Austrian Parliament Building
  8. 19:00

    Dinner at Salm Bräu

    ~90 min

The Salm Bräu brews its own beer on the premises, right beside the Belvedere gardens. Pork roasts, goulash, and house-made lager in a warm, wood-panelled room — a proper Austrian dinner without any tourist-trap pretence.

    Dinner at Salm Bräu
  9. 21:00

    Evening at Jazzclub ZWE

    ~90 min

End the day with live music at Jazzclub ZWE in Alsergrund. The programme skews toward serious jazz, and the room has the low-lit, close-quarters feel that the music demands.

    Evening at Jazzclub ZWE

Day 3

  1. 09:00

    Breakfast & Transit to Landstraße

    ~30 min

Take the U1 or U2 toward the 3rd district. The Belvedere is an easy walk from Karlsplatz or Südbahnhof.

  2. 09:30

    Belvedere Palace & Gardens

    ~120 min

The Upper Belvedere houses Klimt's 'The Kiss' — one of those paintings that still surprises in person — alongside a deep collection of Austrian art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The formal baroque gardens connecting the Upper and Lower palaces are among the finest in Central Europe.

    Belvedere Palace & Gardens
  3. 12:00

    Lunch at Artner

    ~75 min

Artner sits close to the Belvedere in the Landstraße district and combines a serious wine cellar with confident Austrian-Mediterranean cooking. A calm, grown-up lunch spot that doesn't rush you.

    Lunch at Artner
  4. 13:30

    Hundertwasserhaus

    ~45 min

A fifteen-minute walk from Artner brings you to Friedensreich Hundertwasser's famously uneven apartment block. No two windows are the same size, trees grow from inside the building, and the whole thing looks like it was designed in a dream. It's a real residence, so the exterior is as close as you get.

    Hundertwasserhaus
  5. 15:00

    Donauinsel & the Danube Tower

    ~90 min

Head north to the Danube Island — Vienna's long, car-free leisure strip between the river and the New Danube. From here the Danube Tower (Donauturm) is visible and reachable: ride the lift to the observation deck for a panorama that stretches from the Vienna Woods to the Pannonian plain. The light in the late afternoon is exceptional.

    Donauinsel & the Danube Tower
  6. 19:30

    Farewell Dinner at Das Loft

    ~105 min

Close the trip with dinner at Das Loft, a glass-wrapped restaurant high above the city where the panoramic views over Vienna's rooftops make a fitting final frame for three days well spent.

    Farewell Dinner at Das Loft
  7. 21:30

    Last drink at Tachles

    ~60 min

Cross to Leopoldstadt for a last drink at Tachles, a bar with real character in a neighbourhood that feels genuinely lived-in. A good place to sit, reflect, and decide when to come back.
