Frescoes, Peaks & Cobblestones — Sofia

Sofia sits ringed by mountains that shelter some of the Balkans' most extraordinary medieval painting. This two-day route moves between the city's ancient churches and its high-altitude hinterland — pausing for craft beer, ramen, and Lebanese mezze along the way — before heading south to the Rila valley for a full day with the monastery that defines Bulgarian Orthodox culture.

Day 1

  1. 09:00

    Arrive & Check In

    ~45 min

Settle into your city-centre base and get your bearings. Sofia's compact historic core means almost everything on today's route is walkable.

  2. 10:00

    Boyana Church

    ~90 min

On the wooded lower slopes of Vitosha, Boyana Church holds one of Europe's most important cycles of medieval fresco painting. The portraits dated to 1259 — including a tenderly realistic Desislava and Sebastocrator Kaloyan — prefigure the Italian Renaissance by decades. A UNESCO World Heritage site that earns every superlative without needing any.

  3. 12:00

    National History Museum

    ~90 min

Also on Vitosha's lower flank, Bulgaria's largest museum fills a former communist residence with Thracian gold, medieval icons, and artefacts spanning seven millennia. A logical companion to Boyana — context for everything you just saw on those walls.

  4. 14:00

    Lunch at Стария чинар

    ~60 min

After a morning in the mountains, rustic Bulgarian cooking hits exactly right. Regional classics — think slow-cooked kavarma and shopska salad — served in a no-fuss atmosphere that feels genuinely countryside even inside the city.

  5. 15:30

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral & Saint Sophia Church

    ~75 min

The gold-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral anchors the city's skyline and its crypt shelters an exceptional collection of Orthodox icons. Directly across the square, Saint Sophia Church — the 6th-century basilica that gave the city its name — offers a quieter, older counterpoint. Two monuments in one plaza.

  6. 17:00

    Saint George Rotunda Church

    ~45 min

A short walk south, this Roman rotunda from the 4th century is Sofia's oldest surviving building. Successive layers of fresco — from early Christian through medieval — are visible in the drum interior, a cross-section of the city's long spiritual life.

  7. 19:00

    Evening ramen at Umamido

    ~60 min

Warm, carefully layered broths that stand up to a full day of walking. Umamido's ramen bowls are the real deal — exactly the kind of restorative dinner a church-and-mountain day calls for.

  8. 20:30

    Nightcap at Baskerville

    ~75 min

End the evening in a dimly lit Victorian speakeasy atmosphere. Baskerville's whiskey collection is deep and its cocktails are crafted with real intention — a well-deserved reward after a day of frescoes and altitude.

Day 2

  1. 08:00

    Early Transit to Rila

    ~120 min

The Monastery of Saint John of Rila sits roughly two hours south of Sofia by car or organised transfer. An early start earns you the valley in morning light before the crowds arrive — worth every minute of the alarm.

  2. 10:00

Monastery of Saint John of Rila

    ~150 min

The spiritual heart of Bulgaria, set in a steep Rila valley and alive with striped arches, vivid exterior frescoes, and the constant sound of mountain water. Founded in the 10th century by the hermit Ivan of Rila, the current monastery complex dates largely from the 19th-century rebuilding — every inch of the covered galleries is painted. Allow time to climb the Hrelyo Tower and visit the museum holding Ivan's oak chest and medieval manuscripts.

  3. 12:30

Rest & Picnic in Rila National Park

    ~60 min

The parkland immediately surrounding the monastery belongs to Rila National Park, Bulgaria's largest. Walk a short trail into the forest above the complex — the silence and pine air are a genuine counterweight to the sensory intensity of the frescoed courtyards.

  4. 14:00

    Return to Sofia

    ~120 min

Head back north to the city. The drive retraces the Rila foothills before the Sofia plain opens up — a fine gradual return to urban life.

  5. 16:30

    National Archaeological Museum

    ~75 min

Housed in a converted 15th-century mosque, Bulgaria's oldest museum displays Thracian, Greek, and Roman finds alongside medieval Christian treasures. After a day immersed in Orthodox art, the pre-Christian material grounds the whole journey in the deeper layers beneath it.

    National Archaeological Museum
  6. 18:30

    Dinner at Hom's

    ~75 min

Lebanese mezze and charred grilled specialities with genuine Levantine intensity. Hom's is an excellent pivot from a day of Bulgarian medieval culture — share plates, fresh bread, and the herbaceous punch of a well-made fattoush.

  7. 20:30

Final drinks at Baron Craft Beer Bar

    ~75 min

Wrap up the trip on Budapest Street with a Bulgarian craft beer — or two. Baron pairs rotating local and regional taps with Balkan-grilled snacks, and the atmosphere is convivial enough to stretch a farewell pint into a proper send-off.
