Singapore, Layer by Layer — Singapore

This three-day arc moves from Singapore's great green lungs to its layered heritage districts and finally to the dazzling waterfront that defines the city's silhouette. Mornings are spent at world-class gardens, museums and temples; afternoons dig deeper into the colonial civic core; evenings pull you to the bay for views that reward the whole day's wandering. Upper Thomson's quiet neighbourhood restaurant strip anchors the food story throughout.

Day 1

  1. 13:00

    Arrive & Check In

    ~60 min

Drop your bags, freshen up and orient yourself. You're in Singapore — the city rewards those who pace themselves from the first afternoon.

  2. 14:30

    Singapore Botanic Gardens

    ~120 min

UNESCO-listed and over 160 years old, the Botanic Gardens is the green heart Singapore keeps returning to. Wander from the National Orchid Garden's technicolour terraces down to the Swan Lake lawns, where the city's noise dissolves into birdsong and rustling palms.

    Singapore Botanic Gardens
  3. 19:00

    Dinner at Omoté

    ~75 min

Head up to Upper Thomson for an evening of Japanese cooking at Omoté. The neighbourhood is relaxed and walkable — a world away from the Orchard Road glare — and this is a fine, low-key introduction to the strip's character.

  4. 20:30

    Nightcap at Ming's Pub

    ~60 min

A short stroll along Upper Thomson Road brings you to Ming's Pub, a neighbourhood bar with the easy, unhurried energy that makes this part of the city so liveable. A good place to decompress after the journey and ease into Singapore time.

Day 2

  1. 09:00

    National Museum of Singapore

    ~120 min

Start the day at the island's oldest museum, housed in a grand 1887 neoclassical building whose glass rotunda feels startlingly modern inside. The permanent galleries trace Singapore's story from pre-colonial trading port to the nation it is today — essential context for everything else you'll see.

    National Museum of Singapore
  2. 11:30

    St Andrew's Cathedral

    ~45 min

A five-minute walk from the museum brings you to this immaculate Gothic Revival cathedral, consecrated in 1862. Its gleaming white walls — finished with shell-lime plaster mixed with egg white and coconut husk — stand in quiet contrast to the glass towers pressing in all around.

  3. 12:30

    Lunch at Garçons

    ~75 min

Make your way back up to Upper Thomson for a relaxed lunch at Garçons. The French-inflected neighbourhood bistro feel is a pleasant counterpoint to the morning's colonial monuments.

  4. 14:30

    Sri Mariamman Temple

    ~60 min

Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, founded in 1827, anchors the Chinatown streetscape with its soaring gopuram tower crammed with painted deities. Step inside to find a working place of worship where incense, colour and ritual continue entirely on their own terms.

    Sri Mariamman Temple
  5. 15:45

    National Gallery Singapore

    ~120 min

Occupying the beautifully restored former Supreme Court and City Hall buildings, the National Gallery holds the world's largest public collection of Southeast Asian art. The architecture alone — two 1920s civic giants joined beneath a swooping steel-and-glass canopy — is worth the entrance fee.

    National Gallery Singapore
  6. 19:00

    Dinner at E-Sarn

    ~75 min

E-Sarn brings the bold, herb-forward flavours of northeastern Thai cooking to the table. It's an excellent change of register after a day spent deep in Singapore's civic and sacred heritage.

Day 3

  1. 09:00

    Masjid Sultan & Arab Street

    ~75 min

Begin the final day in Kampong Glam, where the golden domes of Masjid Sultan — completed in 1928 and one of Singapore's most important mosques — preside over a district of textile merchants, perfume traders and indie cafés. Walk the surrounding streets slowly; the architecture here tells a different chapter of the city's plural story.

    Masjid Sultan & Arab Street
  2. 10:30

    Asian Civilisations Museum

    ~90 min

Down on the river, the ACM occupies a handsome 1867 colonial building and traces the civilisations that converged on this trading crossroads — China, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Islamic world and beyond. The Tang Shipwreck gallery, with its extraordinary cargo of 9th-century Chinese ceramics, is not to be rushed.

    Asian Civilisations Museum
  3. 12:30

    Lunch at Soi 19

    ~75 min

Head up to Upper Thomson for a third time — the neighbourhood earns the repeat visits. Soi 19 keeps it unpretentious and flavour-forward, making it a reliable midday stop before the afternoon's big finish.

  4. 14:30

    Gardens by the Bay

    ~120 min

No itinerary built around Singapore's landscapes could leave this out. The Supertree Grove is genuinely surreal in daylight — eighteen steel-and-plant towers up to 50 metres tall — and the Cloud Forest conservatory compresses an entire highland ecosystem into a single domed hall. Save some time to wander the outdoor gardens and take it all in at your own pace.

    Gardens by the Bay
  5. 17:30

Merlion Park & the Bay at Dusk

    ~60 min

Walk along the waterfront to Merlion Park for the golden-hour view that frames Marina Bay perfectly: the Helix Bridge curves to your left, the Esplanade's durian shells sit across the water, and the Marina Bay Sands towers catch the last of the light. It's the city at its most photogenic and — at this hour — surprisingly still.

Merlion Park & the Bay at Dusk
  6. 19:00

    Evening drinks at Shaw's Beernest

    ~90 min

Close the trip at Shaw's Beernest, a bar that takes its craft beer seriously without taking itself too seriously. It's the kind of place where a long, well-spent three days in Singapore feels exactly the right thing to toast.
