Reykjavík Through the Lens — Reykjavik

This two-day photo tour strips Reykjavík down to its most visually arresting places — soaring churches, presidential estates, volcanic wonders, and Cold War landmarks. Each stop is chosen for its distinct character, from the luminous glass dome of Perlan to the wind-swept shores of Viðey Island. Move at a photographer's pace, letting the northern light do the work.

Day 1

  1. 09:00

    Hallgrímskirkja

    ~60 min

Start as the morning light rakes across the city and climb to Hallgrímskirkja first thing. The concrete rocket-ship silhouette of Iceland's landmark Lutheran church is most dramatic when the sky is still pale, and the tower elevator rewards you with a 360° panorama over colourful corrugated rooftops all the way to Mount Esja.

    Hallgrímskirkja
  2. 10:15

    Reykjavík Cathedral

    ~40 min

A short walk downhill brings you to the modest, ochre-tinted Cathedral — the oldest church in the city and a study in understated Nordic ecclesiastical design. The quiet interior and the compact square in front of it make for a striking contrast with the monumental scale you just left behind.

    Reykjavík Cathedral
  3. 11:00

    Alþingishúsið

    ~30 min

Directly beside the Cathedral sits the basalt-stone parliament building — one of the smallest national parliaments in the world and one of the most photogenic. Frame it against Tjörnin lake for a shot that captures the relationship between democratic institution and glacial water that defines central Reykjavík.

    Alþingishúsið
  4. 12:00

    National Gallery of Iceland

    ~75 min

The National Gallery occupies a beautifully converted ice-house on the northern bank of Tjörnin. Icelandic and international art fills bright, well-proportioned rooms, and the building's white-painted exterior reflects wonderfully in the lake on calm days — worth a photograph before you even step inside.

    National Gallery of Iceland
  5. 14:00

    Landakotskirkja

    ~40 min

Iceland's only Catholic cathedral sits atop a small rise in the Landakot quarter, its clean grey facade and green copper roof catching afternoon light beautifully. The surrounding grounds are calm and the elevated position gives unexpected sightlines back toward the downtown skyline.

    Landakotskirkja
  6. 15:30

    Perlan

    ~90 min

End the first day at Perlan, the glass-domed nature museum perched on Öskjuhlíð hill. Inside you'll find Íslenska — a full-scale indoor ice cave — and panoramic decks that deliver the city's finest sunset views. The walk through the surrounding woodland is a bonus visual treat before the golden hour sets in.

    Perlan

Day 2

  1. 09:30

    National Museum of Iceland

    ~90 min

Open your second morning in the grand permanent collection of the National Museum, where Viking-age artefacts, medieval church carvings, and 20th-century domestic objects are displayed in spacious, thoughtfully lit galleries. The building itself — all clean lines and natural stone — is worth photographing from the entrance plaza.

    National Museum of Iceland
  2. 11:30

    Höfði

    ~45 min

Drive or cycle along the waterfront to Höfði, the white timber house where Reagan and Gorbachev met in 1986 to begin the end of the Cold War. The house sits alone against the sea, framed by the Esja mountain range across the bay — a quietly powerful composition that rewards time and patience.

    Höfði
  3. 13:30

    Imagine Peace Tower

    ~75 min

Take the short ferry from Skarfabakki pier to Viðey Island, home to Yoko Ono's Imagine Peace Tower — a wishing well of white stone inscribed in 24 languages that projects a beam of light skyward each October. Even unlit, the monument and the island's basalt coast and wheeling seabirds create extraordinary photographic material.

    Imagine Peace Tower
  4. 15:30

    Reykjavík Botanic Garden

    ~60 min

Back on the mainland, the Botanic Garden in Laugardalur offers a surprising change of palette — over 5,000 plant species from subarctic and temperate zones, laid out in colour-coded beds and winding gravel paths. Late afternoon softens the light across the flower borders and makes macro photography particularly rewarding.

    Reykjavík Botanic Garden
  5. 17:00

    Bessastaðir

    ~60 min

Close the tour with a run out to the Álftanes peninsula and the Presidential Estate at Bessastaðir. The white manor house, church, and long stone wall compose a quintessential Icelandic tableau against a wide, often dramatic sky. Come as the light goes low and the colours shift — it's the perfect final frame.
