Two Shores, One Strait — Istanbul

This two-day itinerary is built around the water. Day one traces the European shore northward — from the Galata Bridge and its landmark views, through Ortakoy's mosque sitting under the great suspension bridge, up to the Rumeli Fortress at Bebek — before crossing back by ferry to eat and drink with the strait at your feet. Day two crosses to the Asian side: Üsküdar, the Maiden's Tower, and the quieter rhythms of Istanbul's eastern bank, bookended by a return crossing as the city lights up at dusk.

Day 1

  1. 09:00

    Arrive & Check In

    ~45 min

Settle into your hotel and get your bearings. Sultanahmet and Karaköy are both ideal bases for this itinerary — you'll want to be within easy walking distance of the waterfront.

  2. 09:45

    Galata Bridge

    ~40 min

Start where the Golden Horn meets the Bosphorus. Walk the full length of Galata Bridge — the lower deck hums with fishermen and tea sellers, while the upper deck delivers that wide-open view of the water, the minarets behind you and the strait opening ahead. This is the threshold between the old city and everything the water connects.

  3. 12:00

    Lunch at Pandeli

    ~75 min

Head to Eminönü for lunch at Pandeli, one of Istanbul's most storied dining rooms, tucked inside the Egyptian Bazaar. The tiled interior and long-standing menu of Ottoman-influenced Turkish cooking make it a fine way to anchor the morning's waterfront walk before boarding a ferry.

  4. 13:30

    Bosphorus Ferry North to Ortakoy

    ~40 min

Board a public Bosphorus ferry from Eminönü heading north along the European shore. The strait does the sightseeing for you — tankers, wooden yalıs, wooded hillsides and the first glimpse of the suspension bridge growing larger as you approach Ortakoy.

  5. 14:10

    Ortakoy & the Bosphorus Bridge

    ~90 min

Disembark at Ortakoy and spend time in the square around the Büyük Mecidiye Mosque — its Baroque silhouette framed by the suspension bridge above is one of Istanbul's most arresting compositions. Wander the waterfront promenade, grab a kumpir from one of the stalls along the square, and look back at the strait from the pier. The bridge and mosque together are best seen in the afternoon light.

  6. 16:00

    İstanbul Modern Sanat Müzesi

    ~75 min

Take the ferry back south and stop at Istanbul Modern, the city's flagship contemporary art museum sitting right on the Bosphorus waterfront in Karaköy. The building itself frames the strait through floor-to-ceiling glass — art and water in constant conversation. A strong way to transition from outdoor wandering into the evening.

  7. 19:00

    Dinner at Hamdi

    ~90 min

Hamdi in Eminönü is the place for southeastern Turkish kebabs with a terrace view over the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus beyond. As the sky darkens and the minarets light up, the terrace becomes one of the best free shows in the city. Order the perde pilavı if it's on the menu.

  8. 20:45

Evening Drink at Legacy Ottoman Roof Bar

    ~75 min

Cap day one at the Legacy Ottoman Roof Bar in Sultanahmet, where the rooftop setting puts Ayasofya and the strait within eyeshot as the city settles into night. A slow drink here, looking out over the water, is a fitting close to a day that began at the bridge and worked its way up the shore.

Day 2

  1. 09:00

    Morning Ferry to Üsküdar

    ~25 min

Cross to the Asian side on the short Eminönü–Üsküdar ferry — one of the great commuter crossings in the world. The Bosphorus is at its most alive in the morning, with tanker traffic, seagulls and the city's two continents facing each other across the water.

  2. 09:30

    Maiden's Tower

    ~75 min

The Maiden's Tower stands on a tiny islet just off the Üsküdar shore — possibly the most recognisable silhouette on the Bosphorus. Take the short boat transfer from Üsküdar pier and walk through its long history: Byzantine chain tower, Ottoman lighthouse, quarantine station, and now a restored landmark with an interior exhibition. The views back to the European skyline from the tower's gallery are exceptional.

  3. 10:45

    Wander Üsküdar

    ~60 min

Back on shore, spend an hour in Üsküdar proper — a neighbourhood that moves at a slightly different pace than the European side. The waterfront promenade, the old Mihrimah Sultan Mosque above the square, and the tea gardens overlooking the strait are all worth slow exploration without a fixed agenda.

  4. 12:30

    Lunch at Giritli

    ~90 min

Ferry back to the European side and lunch at Giritli in Cankurtaran — a Cretan-Turkish table known for its parade of mezes and fish dishes rooted in Aegean tradition. A generous, unhurried meal that reflects the maritime culture this whole day has been built around.

  5. 14:30

    Walls of Constantinople

    ~75 min

Take a short taxi or tram west to walk a stretch of the Theodosian Walls — the 5th-century fortifications that once made this city impregnable. While not on the Bosphorus itself, they are the reason the strait mattered: these walls and that water together defined Constantinople for a thousand years. Walking the outer moat gives a powerful sense of scale.

  6. 16:15

    SALT Galata

    ~60 min

Head back to Karaköy and spend the late afternoon at SALT Galata, a cultural institution housed in the old Ottoman Bank building. Its archive, exhibitions, and open reading rooms are genuinely absorbing — and the building itself, with its neoclassical bones, is worth the visit even before you read a single wall label.

  7. 19:00

    Farewell Dinner at Sarnic Restaurant

    ~90 min

End the journey at Sarnic in Sultanahmet — a restaurant built inside a restored Byzantine cistern, with vaulted ceilings and candlelight reflecting off ancient stone. After two days spent looking at Istanbul from the water, dining beneath the city's oldest foundations feels like the right counterpoint: the strait above, the deep past below.
