Through the Lens of the Inca: A Cusco Photo Tour — Cusco

This two-day visual journey moves from Cusco's colonial heart outward to its Inca ceremonial hinterland. Day one plants you firmly in the city — cathedral facades, gilded interiors, and the grand plaza that has anchored Andean life for centuries. Day two sweeps you into the hills and valleys beyond, where terraced ruins and remote sanctuaries reward every angle of morning and afternoon light.

Day 1

  1. 07:30

    Plaza de Armas

    ~60 min

Arrive early when the morning light rakes across the cobblestones at a low golden angle. The plaza's symmetry — arcaded portals, twin cathedral towers, the geometry of the central fountain — rewards a wide lens. Traffic is thin, crowds are sparse, and the Andean sky is at its most electric blue before mid-morning haze settles in.

  2. 08:45

    Cusco Cathedral

    ~75 min

Step inside the cathedral that took nearly a century to complete. The baroque facade alone is a layered composition of volcanic red granite, but the interior rewards patience: darkened altarpieces, the famous painting of the Last Supper with a roasted cuy on the table, and side chapels that absorb and hold candlelight beautifully. A tripod and a slow shutter will serve you well here.

  3. 10:15

Church of the Society of Jesus

    ~60 min

Standing shoulder to shoulder with the cathedral, this Jesuit church punches well above its footprint. The facade's carved stonework is among the most ornate in the Americas, and the interior's gilded altars create a warm, amber-toned shooting environment that contrasts strikingly with the cool stone exterior. Shoot both in the same visit.

  4. 11:30

    Coricancha

    ~90 min

The Temple of the Sun is the defining image of Cusco's layered history — perfectly fitted Inca stonework visible beneath and alongside a Spanish colonial convent built directly on top. The curved outer wall, the trapezoidal niches, and the juxtaposition of two civilisations in a single frame make this the most photographically rich site in the city. Take your time with the garden courtyard.

  5. 13:30

    Basilica of La Merced, Cusco

    ~60 min

A quieter colonial church just off the main plaza, La Merced's cloister is a revelation — two-tiered arcades framing a manicured courtyard that floods with diffused afternoon light. The mural cycle running along the cloister walls tells the story of the Mercedarian order in vivid colour, and the sacristy holds a monstrance said to be encrusted with thousands of diamonds and pearls.

  6. 15:00

    Saqsaywaman

    ~120 min

End your first day at the great zigzagging fortress above the city. The late-afternoon light turns the massive limestone blocks — some weighing over 100 tonnes — a deep honey colour, and the panoramic view down over Cusco's terracotta rooftops is the kind of shot that defines a trip. Wide-angle for the walls, telephoto for the city below: bring both.

Day 2

  1. 07:30

    Q'inqu

    ~60 min

Begin day two at this ceremonial limestone outcrop just outside the city, before tour groups arrive. The carved channels, subterranean chambers, and rock-cut altars are intimate and shadowed — a very different visual register from open-air ruins. Early morning mist sometimes drifts across the site, adding a moody atmospheric layer that is impossible to replicate at midday.

    Q'inqu
  2. 09:00

    Puka Pukara

    ~60 min

This compact military or administrative outpost sits on a hillside along the road to Pisac, and its ruddy-pink stonework — which gives it the name 'Red Fortress' — catches mid-morning light beautifully. The terraced platforms and watchtowers frame well against the surrounding valley, and the site is rarely crowded, giving you space to compose without interference.

  3. 10:15

    Tambomachay

    ~60 min

A short walk from Puka Pukara, Tambomachay is a ritual water shrine where spring water still flows through Inca-engineered channels and cascades down carved stone niches. The combination of running water, mossy stonework, and mountain backdrop is quietly spectacular. A slower shutter speed will smooth the water into silk against the precision of the masonry.

  4. 11:30

    Temple of the Moon

    ~75 min

Set inside a natural cave on the flanks of a hill above Saqsaywaman, the Temple of the Moon is one of Cusco's most atmospheric and overlooked sites. The cave's interior is lined with Inca niches and carved rock, and the filtered light that enters from the cave mouth creates extraordinary natural chiaroscuro — the kind of light a photographer waits for.

  5. 13:30

    Moray

    ~90 min

The Inca agricultural laboratory of Moray is one of the most visually arresting sites in the entire Sacred Valley — concentric circular terraces descend into the earth like an amphitheatre designed by a mathematician. The geometric precision and the sheer improbability of the structure make it endlessly photographable from the rim. Afternoon light catches the terracing from the west, creating strong shadow lines that define every level.

  6. 15:30

    Tipón

    ~90 min

Close the tour at Tipón, a sprawling Inca estate south of Cusco where water management becomes monumental art. Terraces climb the hillside in long elegant rows, and the water channels that run through them have functioned continuously for centuries. The late afternoon sun throws long shadows across the stone platforms — a satisfying, quietly grand final frame for two days of shooting through the Inca world.
