Chicago, Course by Course — Chicago

Day one traces the city's architectural spine — Willis Tower's sky-high view, the Chicago Architecture Centre by the river, Marina City's corncob silhouette — before landing on Randolph Street for a West Loop dinner. Day two opens in Grant Park, follows the lakeshore south through Buckingham Fountain to the Field Museum and Adler Planetarium, then loops back north for a Riviera-style evening in River North.

Day 1

  1. 09:00

    Arrive & Check In

    ~30 min

Drop your bags at your Loop hotel and get your bearings — you're within walking distance of almost everything on today's itinerary.

  2. 09:30

    Wildberry Pancakes and Cafe

    ~60 min

Start day one properly at this Loop breakfast favourite, where stacked pancakes and inventive egg dishes fuel a full morning of architecture-gazing. Arrive on the earlier side to beat the queue.

  3. 11:00

    Willis Tower — Skydeck

    ~75 min

Step out onto the glass-floored Ledge, 103 floors above the street, and watch the city lay itself out in every direction — the lake to the east, the grid stretching west to the horizon. It's the single most clarifying view Chicago offers.

    Willis Tower — Skydeck
  4. 12:30

    Chicago Board of Trade Building

    ~30 min

A short walk south brings you to one of the Loop's great Art Deco statements. The massive limestone facade and the blind goddess Ceres crowning the rooftop tell you everything about Chicago's ambition in the 1930s — stand on LaSalle Street and look straight up.

    Chicago Board of Trade Building
  5. 13:00

    Lunch at The Berghoff Restaurant

    ~60 min

One of Chicago's oldest continuously operating restaurants, The Berghoff has been pouring its own-label beer and plating schnitzel since 1898. The dark wood panelling and white-jacketed servers set a mood that no new opening can replicate.

    Lunch at The Berghoff Restaurant
  6. 14:15

    Marina City & the Riverfront

    ~60 min

Head north to the river and Bertrand Goldberg's iconic twin towers — their semicircular balconies stacked like coins make them the most photographed residential buildings in the city. Walk the riverwalk beneath them and watch the water traffic pass.

    Marina City & the Riverfront
  7. 15:30

    300 North LaSalle

    ~30 min

Just along the river, this sleek glass tower by Pickard Chilton rewards a closer look — the curtain wall shifts colour with the sky and the way it meets the waterline is quietly spectacular.

    300 North LaSalle
  8. 19:00

West Loop — Randolph Street Dinner

    ~90 min

End day one on Randolph Street at Haymarket Pub & Brewery, where the West Loop's industrial bones meet a serious craft beer programme. The menu runs from pub classics to more considered plates — pick a few and match them to whatever's on the rotating taps.

  9. 20:45

Nightcap at Lobby Bar at Palmer House

    ~60 min

Wind down beneath the Palmer House's extraordinary frescoed ceiling — one of the most ornate interiors in any American hotel. A whiskey or a classic cocktail here feels like the only fitting end to a day spent staring at great buildings.

Day 2

  1. 08:30

    Morning Coffee & Pastry

    ~30 min

Pick up a coffee and something sweet from a café near your hotel and ease into the morning before hitting the park.

  2. 09:00

    Grant Park & Millennium Park

    ~60 min

Chicago's great front lawn stretches along the lakefront with the skyline as its backdrop. Walk through Millennium Park's open plazas — the giant reflective Bean, the Crown Fountain, the Pritzker Pavilion — before the crowds gather.

    Grant Park & Millennium Park
  3. 10:00

    Buckingham Fountain

    ~30 min

Continue south through Grant Park to one of the largest ornamental fountains in the world. The central jet reaches 46 metres at its peak, and the surrounding park views — lake on one side, skyline on the other — are among the finest in the city.

    Buckingham Fountain
  4. 10:45

    Brunch at The Gage

    ~75 min

Across from Millennium Park, The Gage pairs a handsome bar room with a menu that swings confidently between comfort and craft. Order the eggs, a Bloody Mary, and a window seat if you can get one.

    Brunch at The Gage
  5. 12:15

    Field Museum of Natural History

    ~120 min

Take a taxi or rideshare south to Museum Campus. The Field Museum's neoclassical bulk houses one of the world's great natural history collections — the Evolving Planet halls, the ancient Egypt rooms, and Sue, the most complete T. rex ever found, all warrant proper time.

    Field Museum of Natural History
  6. 14:30

    Adler Planetarium

    ~75 min

A short walk along the lakefront peninsula brings you to the Adler — America's first planetarium. The terrace out front gives perhaps the finest unobstructed view of the full Chicago skyline, with the lake stretching behind you. Catch a sky show inside before heading back north.

    Adler Planetarium
  7. 16:00

    Transit back to River North

    ~25 min

Grab a rideshare or hop the #146 bus back up to River North in time to freshen up before dinner.

  8. 18:30

    Dinner at Lou Malnati's Pizzeria

    ~90 min

No Chicago trip is complete without a deep-dish, and Lou Malnati's has been making the case for its own version since 1971. The buttery crust, chunky tomato sauce, and layers of sausage and cheese arrive in a cast-iron pan — allow the full baking time and order a round of drinks while you wait.

    Dinner at Lou Malnati's Pizzeria
  9. 20:30

Evening Drinks at Three Dots and a Dash

    ~90 min

Descend into River North's celebrated tiki bar — down a narrow alley and a flight of stairs — for a triumphant final evening. The rum-forward cocktails arrive in ceramic skulls and smoking bowls; the whole room glows amber and smells of citrus and toasted coconut. A genuinely singular Chicago send-off.
