Begin the final day back on castle hill at Hungary's national library, housed in the south wing of the Buda Castle complex. Even without a reader's pass the reading rooms and the panoramic terrace are worth the visit — the view of Elisabeth Bridge from here is one of the day's quiet rewards.

Walk down from the hill and cross the city on its slenderest and most elegant bridge. The white cable-stayed span connects the Buda hillside directly to the heart of Pest's inner city — crossing it on foot mid-morning, with boat traffic on the Danube below, is one of Budapest's great small pleasures.

Back in Lipótváros, Textúra earns its midday visit with precise, seasonal cooking that sits comfortably between neighbourhood restaurant and serious table. A good place to pause and take stock before the afternoon's cultural loop.

The grand neoclassical building on Múzeum körút houses Hungary's principal history collection, ranging from the Roman occupation of Pannonia through to the twentieth century. The permanent archaeology galleries and the coronation regalia room are the anchors.

A short stroll toward the riverbank brings you to this curiosity on the Pest embankment — a working water clock that has marked exact time for the city since the 1980s. It's a good excuse to slow down and watch the river traffic before the evening begins.
