Two Days at the Root of the West — Athens

This two-day arc moves through Athens the way archaeology does — layer by layer. Day one climbs straight to the Acropolis at opening hour, then descends through its surrounding monuments and ends with dinner and a view. Day two spreads across the flat city: the Ancient Agora, the National Archaeological Museum, and an evening in Kolonaki with the hill still glowing in the distance.

Day 1

  1. 14:00

    Check in & settle

    ~60 min

Drop your bags and get your bearings. Staying somewhere in or near Plaka puts the hill within easy walking distance for an early-morning start — which is exactly what tomorrow demands.

  2. 15:30

    Acropolis of Athens

    ~60 min

Athens' great rock needs no mythologising — just the right timing. Head up in the late afternoon when the crowds thin and the Attic light turns amber across the limestone. The Acropolis is the frame for everything else you'll see over the next two days.

  3. 16:00

    Parthenon

    ~45 min

Standing inside the Acropolis precinct, the Parthenon stops you cold — its colonnade slightly curved to trick the eye into reading it as perfectly straight. Spend time walking its full perimeter before the site closes.

  4. 16:45

    Erechtheion

    ~30 min

A short walk north of the Parthenon, the Erechtheion's Porch of the Caryatids — six sculpted women standing in for columns — is one of the most quietly extraordinary sights in all of Greece.

  5. 20:00

    Dinner at Lontos

    ~90 min

Descend the hill to Thissio and take a table at Lontos. The neighbourhood restaurant sits close enough to the Acropolis that you can still feel its gravitational pull while you eat.

  6. 21:30

    Evening drink at Veranda

    ~75 min

End the night at Veranda in Plaka, a bar whose terrace looks straight up at the floodlit Acropolis. Order something cold and let the view do the rest — this is the rooftop moment the itinerary promised.

Day 2

  1. 08:00

    Acropolis Museum — first entry

    ~90 min

Be at the Acropolis Museum when it opens. The top floor's glass gallery aligns perfectly with the Parthenon on the hill above, and the friezes, pediment sculptures and the original Caryatid figures are best appreciated before tour groups arrive.

  2. 09:45

    Brunch at Καφέ Αβησυνία

    ~60 min

Cross into Monastiraki and take a mid-morning break at Καφέ Αβησυνία, whose terrace overlooks the flea-market square. A relaxed spot to refuel before the Agora.

  3. 11:00

    Ancient Agora of Athens

    ~90 min

The Agora was the democratic and commercial heartbeat of classical Athens — a wide open site where Socrates argued and citizens voted. The reconstructed Stoa of Attalos houses sharp contextual finds, and the Temple of Hephaestus at the far end is one of the best-preserved ancient temples anywhere.

  4. 12:45

    Hadrian's Library

    ~45 min

A five-minute walk from the Agora entrance, Hadrian's Library is an often-overlooked Roman-era complex with a monumental colonnaded facade. Its ruined courtyard gives a clear sense of the imperial layer Athens accumulated on top of its classical bones.

  5. 13:45

    Lunch at Η Στοά Αλλιώς

    ~75 min

Head north into Psyrri for lunch at Η Στοά Αλλιώς, a short taxi or metro ride away. The restaurant's name references the covered arcades that once defined Athenian street life — a fitting nod to the morning's discoveries.

  6. 15:15

    Tower of the Winds

    ~30 min

Back in the Roman Agora quarter, the Tower of the Winds is an octagonal marble clocktower built in the 1st century BC — each face carved with a relief of a different wind deity. Small but genuinely beautiful.

  7. 19:30

    Farewell drink at Chez Michel

    ~60 min

Close the trip in Kolonaki at Chez Michel, a café-bistrot with a neighbourhood ease that makes it a perfect place to sit and reflect — or simply enjoy one last drink before your journey home.
